SQA Level 4 Award in The Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

Introduction

This qualification covers the following areas:

  • The underpinning knowledge and understanding of the principles of and practices of internal quality assurance
  • The planning of quality assurance
  • Evaluation of the quality of assessment; maintenance and improvement of the quality of assessment; managing information relating to the quality of assessment and maintaining robust and legal quality assurance practice.  

Objectives

    As this is a knowledge- and competence-based qualification, candidates will be acquiring the knowledge and skills required through on-the-job experience or in a learning environment. To achieve the whole qualification verifier-candidates need to complete two mandatory units (12 credits):

    • FD4A 63: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Internally Assuring the Quality of Assessment
    • FD4C 63: Internally Assure the Quality of Assessment

Training Methodology

This training course includes various techniques to maximize understanding, retention, and ability to apply the learning, including a training course manual, suggested reading, presentations, individual and group exercises, video and group discussion.

The training course will be interactive and will challenge delegates to “think differently” about “sustainability” and about their part in delivering the strategic direction of their organization. The tutor will guide delegates to apply the learning and their understanding of their own organizations.

This qualification is suitable for:

  • Practitioners who require formal recognition of their occupational competence for the role of IQA to meet the Assessment Strategies of Sector Skills Councils/ regulatory requirements.

Course Outline

Learning Outcome: the learner will:

LO1 Understand the context and principles of internal quality assurance

Assessment Criterion The learner can:

  • Explain the functions of internal quality assurance in learning and development
  • Explain the key concepts and principles of the internal quality assurance of assessment
  • Explain the roles of practitioners involved in the internal and external quality assurance process
  • Explain the regulations and requirements for internal quality assurance in own area of practice

LO2: Understand how to plan the internal quality assurance of assessment

  • Evaluate the importance of planning and preparing internal quality assurance activities
  • Explain what an internal quality assurance plan should contain

Summaries the preparations that need to be made for internal quality assurance, including:

  • information collection
  • communications
  • administrative arrangements
  • resources

LO3: Understand techniques and criteria for monitoring the quality of assessment internally

  • Evaluate different techniques for sampling evidence of assessment, including use of technology
  • Explain the appropriate criteria to use for judging the quality of the assessment process
  • Understand how to internally maintain and improve the quality of assessment
  • Summaries the types of feedback, support and advice that assessors may need to maintain and improve the quality of assessment
  • Explain standardization requirements in relation to assessment
  • Explain relevant procedures regarding disputes about the quality of assessment

LO5: Understand how to manage information relevant to the internal quality assurance of assessment

  • Evaluate requirements for information management, data protection and confidentiality in relation to the internal quality assurance of assessment

LO6:  Understand the legal and good practice requirements for the internal quality assurance of assessment

  • Evaluate legal issues, policies and procedures relevant to the internal quality assurance of assessment, including those for health, safety and welfare
  • Evaluate different ways in which technology can contribute to the internal quality assurance of assessment
  • Explain the value of reflective practice and continuing professional development in relation to internal quality assurance
  • Evaluate requirements for equality and diversity and, where appropriate, bilingualism, in relation to the internal quality assurance of assessment
